Area covered are designated fishing areas all over the world

Closing fishing areas and regulating the use offishing gear can result in more profitable catches that boost fishermen's incomes. Fishing close to an area with fishery closures led to larger catches of fish with a higher market value. And the ban on seine nets also increased fishermen's income, the study found. Fishermen are fishing right outside the designated areas and are basically working the system.

I think that this is not good for the fishing areas. This is somewhat defeating the purpose of the designated areas. They are missing the point which is that if they do not slow down the rate at which they fish they will depleat all the fish for generations to come.
seine nets-A seine is a large fishing net that hangs vertically in the water by attaching weights along the bottom edge and floats along the top. Boats equipped for seine fishing are called seiners.

Area covered-forests throughout all over the world regarding deforestation
At the Oslo climate and Forest Conference in Norway on Friday, over 50 developed and developing countries signed a "Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation" (REDD) partnership, committing to spend over $4 billion in the next three years to reduce emissions from deforestation activities.
I think this is what the developing countries need to attempt and slow down the rate of deforestation. It will not be easy to inforce in massive forests like in Brazil but this is needed to stop or slow down the incredibly fast pace of deforestation.
degradation-is the deterioration of the environment through depletion of resources such as air, water and soil; the destruction of ecosystemsand the extinction of wildlife

Now unveiled a 12 watt EnduraLED light bulb, the industry’s first LED replacement for a 60 watt incandescent light bulb. Consumers will now have an LED alternative to the most commonly used incandescent bulb, which will deliver up to 80% energy savings and last 25 times longer than its century-old predecessor.

I think that these LED light bulbs are jst another step in the right direction and this can save millions of dollars of energy a year if this becomes a hit and catchs on quick.

LED- he LED is based on the semiconductor diode. When a diode is forward biased (switched on), electrons are able to recombine with holes within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons. This effect is called electro luminescence and the color of the light (corresponding to the energy of the photon) is determined by the energy gap of the semiconductor.

WIND POWER COMPLICATIONS WITH RADAR

WIND POWER COMPLICATIONS WITH RADAR

Andy Soos. ENN. April 16, 2010.

Miller Chapter: 1, 17.

Area Covered: Regional (Eastern Oregon)

Construction of an 845 megawatt wind farm (the largest wind farm to be in the United States) is being halted by the U.S. Airforce. The reason for this is the wind turbines generate energy producing a false image on the Airforce's doppler image. This has delayed the project greatly and constructors are concerned that if the project does not start soon, they will lose government stimulus dollars and it will never get done. In a 2003 study, the British Department of Trade and Industry stated that there are hardware or software mitagation that can be implemented to solve this problem. For now the Obama administration is working with the Pentagon to get the project underway.

This article shows you have to be very selective on where you put a wind farm. Not only do you need substantial wind annually, easy access to the power grid, and somewhere where bird populations won't be hurt, but now you have to look out for Air Force bases.

Miller Chapter: 1, 19, 20, 18, 16, 17, 25.

Colorado Governor Bill Ritter signed a bill into law that will sharply reduce emissions from the states coal-fired power plants. The Clean Air-Clean Jobs Act will have the state cut back it emissions while creating new green jobs. Working with Xcel energy, Colorado will cut out 900 megawatts of coal fired energy and replace it with natural gas and renewable energy. Governor Ritter stated that the bill will serve as a paradigm for the nation to see that creating new jobs and having a greener economy is possible.

I think Colorado is doing a great job in leading the way for other states to see that going green isn't that hard. This is the type of spark our country needs to realize the magnitude of climate change and how we have to save our planet before it is to late.

Government May Support Nuclear Power's Comeback

April 13, 2010

This article relates to the miller text book because this deals with renewable energy, being nuclear power.

Area covered is the United States

Obama is now looking at alternative energy sources and has agreed to subsidize new nuclear power plants. But restarting the nuclear power industry — which has been treading water for 30 years — won't be easy. By many nuclear power is still viewed as a major risk for two major reasons. One would be some of the unknowns, because we haven't built here in 30 years. And they want to watch the licensing process work and they want to prove us at our word that we can replicate what's happened overseas. Another risk is that american utility companies tend to be smaller than their foreign counterparts. They don't have as much cash, so they have to borrow more. And the typical nuclear project runs about $10 billion, give or take. Overall nuclear power is a risk but is a way to solve a part of the energy crisis for america.

I think that this is good idea for the country because it does not release greenhouse gases and produces a lot of energy.

Brazil farmers shown how to profit by conserving

This article relates to the topic of persevering ecosystems and the environment.

Are covered is Brazil

The state is Brazil's top soy producer, churning out an annual harvest of about 18 million tones. The crops have helped fuel Brazil's economic boom of recent years but they come at a price -- the clearing of more than 130,000 square km (50,000 square miles) of Amazon rain forest in the state from 1988 through 2008, to the widespread condemnation of environmental groups. So, with "save the world" emotional appeals not working, environmentalists are turning to economic arguments, stressing how preserving the world's largest forest can mean bigger profits for farmers. This plan is adding that about 132,000 hectares (326,000 acres) of preserves in several states have been or are being legalized.

I believe that this is great for Brazil because as they are developing they are destroying the rain forest at an unsustainable rate. This is exactly what Brazil needs to push them in the right direction.
